Start Your AssessmentOrthopedic Surgery in China: what international patients should know
Last updated:
Quick answer
Joint replacement, spine surgery and arthroscopic repair are commonly arranged for international patients in China, often at large orthopedic departments that perform high volumes. Surgery is usually considered after non-surgical care has failed to control pain and function. Suitability is decided by the surgeon after examining you and reviewing your imaging.
Typically a good fit if
- Persistent joint or spine pain and loss of function despite physiotherapy, medication or injections.
- A surgeon at home has recommended replacement or fusion and you face a long wait or a high price.
- You have recent MRI or X-ray images you can send for review.
- You can travel and stay roughly two to four weeks, depending on the procedure.
May not be suitable if
- You have a recent heart attack, unstable heart disease or other conditions that make surgery or flying unsafe.
- You are looking for surgery for pain that has not yet been treated conservatively.
- You expect a fixed price before imaging has been reviewed.
- You cannot arrange a companion or follow a rehabilitation plan after surgery.
How it works, step by step
- 1Send imaging and history
Recent MRI or X-rays, medical history, current medications and any previous surgery.
- 2Surgeon review
A specialist assesses whether surgery is appropriate and which approach suits you.
- 3Quote and plan
Implant choice, expected hospital stay and an itemised quote are confirmed in writing.
- 4Workup and surgery
Pre-operative tests, surgery and early rehabilitation, with an interpreter at key appointments.
- 5Recovery and handover
A short observation stay, clearance to fly, and a rehabilitation plan for your physiotherapist at home.

Questions to ask your care team
- Do you recommend surgery for me, and what are the alternatives?
- Which implant and approach will you use, and why?
- How many of this procedure does the surgeon perform each year?
- How long must I stay before I can fly home safely, and what is the blood-clot prevention plan?
- What rehabilitation do I need after I go home?
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in China for a joint replacement?
Plan roughly two to three weeks: a few days of assessment, the surgery, several days in hospital, and a short observation period before the surgeon clears you to fly. Your surgeon will confirm the timing for your case.
Is it safe to fly after hip or knee surgery?
Long flights increase the risk of blood clots after joint surgery. Surgeons usually advise waiting until early mobility is established and may prescribe clot prevention. Follow your own surgeon's instructions.
What images do I need to send?
Recent MRI or X-ray images in their original format (DICOM discs or files), the radiology reports, a short history of previous treatment and your current medications.
Who handles rehabilitation when I return home?
You will receive a written rehabilitation plan and imaging to share with your local surgeon or physiotherapist. Arrange follow-up at home before you travel.
